1. Envelope Stuffing
One of the oldest scams in the book, this con promises high payment for the simple routine task of envelope stuffing. If you send in money, the company will send you flyers and envelopes to stuff with postage already attached. Instead, what they do is send you a flyer to post around town enticing other people to stuff envelopes. So instead of doing the actual labor they advertised, you in turn perpetuate the scam. This is a classic pyramid scheme–you won’t earn legitimate money and it’s unethical to boot.
2. Chain Mail or Chain Emails
This scam promises you tons of cash in exchange for forwarding letters or e-mails. All you have to do is send money to the top-listed recipients of the letters and you add your name to the bottom of the list. In time, your name will reach the top and you will be a millionaire. Never give money to any company that promises you millions for simply spamming other people. Basically, this is another pyramid scheme and under some laws it constitutes fraud.
3. Craft Assembly
Another age old scam in which you must purchase craft kits from a company and assemble them, and then you return the finished products for compensation. However, 9 times out of 10, the company will state that your finished products don’t meet their quality standards. That’s because they make money selling the craft kits to other people trying to start their own cottage industries. They don’t ever intend to sell the finished product. If you want to start your own crafting industry, look into selling your wares on eBay or Etsy where you will get back your initial investment and make a profit.
4. 900 numbers
This is a rip-off that should send up red flags immediately, but those desperate for financial freedom are often duped. Obviously, if you have to call a 900 number you will end up with huge charges on your phone bill and the scammers don’t have to give you any information in return. Stay away from them at all costs.
5. Employment Lists
In this rip-off scheme, you pay someone to provide you with a list of companies that hire people who work from home. However, this information is usually too generic (ie. just a list of every conceivable company in the book) or outdated to be of any use in your employment search. Most of this information can be found with a judicious Google search, anyway. No need to pay anyone for information you can dig up yourself. Obviously, if you want to find a way to work from home, you are dissatisfied with your current situation in life. But don’t let your dissatisfaction lead you to desperation. You can become a successful business owner as long as you find genuine opportunities out there. By avoiding these scams, you can avoid becoming a victim and you can find the right and lawful job you deserve.
